WATER DAMAGE 101

Water Damage

Unwanted water in your home can be very stressful, especially if you don’t know the origin. Seeping water damage is pervasive and can do serious damage to property and valuables. Immediate steps need to be taken to reduce the damage within the first 48 hours.

As soon as water damage is identified, follow these steps:

  • Remain calm
  • Turn off your main water valve
  • Call 573.694.4516 – Tiger Carpet Care & Water Restoration
  • Shut of electric to the affected areas
  • Remove any valuables, books, papers, fabrics/pillows, plants, etc. to avoid more damage to carpets
  • Lift any curtains or draperies to avoid wet carpet

Avoid these:

  • Using your own vacuum – this can cause electrical shock and can damage your equipment
  • Walking on carpet in the affected area; It keeps the damage from spreading

NOW WHAT?

Now that damage has been identified and water mitigation has begun, it is time to determine if this is an insurance claim or not.  Here are five things that every homeowner should know about water damage.

Difference between flood damage and water damage

Water in your home from a burst pipe or split hose is typically covered. However, ground water or water from the outside is typically flood damage and not covered by insurance.

Not ALL water damage is covered by insurance

It is always a good idea to review your insurance policy and familiarize yourself with any exclusions in your water damage coverage.

The clock is ticking

Water damage should be taken care of immediately and definitely within 48 hours. There are additional risks and other damage can occur that is associated with the water damage. Mold begins to grow within 24 to 48 hours and breeds in wet carpet and moist/wet drywall.

To prevent mold growth, the damaged area will need to be COMPLETELY dry. Tiger Carpet Care & Water Restoration has the equipment and staff to be on site within an hour of the emergency phone call, to extract and dry the damaged area.
